According to Jason Gay, in his “The Couch” column, as far as sports are concerned, The Wall Street Journal will be no longer referring to athletes using the formalities of “Mr.” or “Ms.”
From now on, Derek Jeter will be Jeter, not Mr. Jeter.
And Lindsey Vonn will be Vonn, not Ms. Vonn.
This change in “honorific” policy is just for sportswriting. The rest of the Journal will keep its traditional approach.
Mr. Gay noted there are some iconic athletes who should forever have the honorific used: Mr. Russell for Bill Russell, Ms. King for Billy Jean King.
And, of course, there’s no doubt that Mr. Met will always be — Mr. Met.
