A follow-up to one appearing “last year”… This time our storyteller describes a new way of dealing with KARL THE FOG’s evil cousin. Not only a good idea BUT also, stimulates other thinking that will roll forward. Enjoy!!! —The Gang
Note: We introduced “Yosh” in the post.
The Japanese word “Yosh” is used in manga to convey, “Alright, let’s go!” Or as they say in Katie’s household: “Go means go!”
Above is a short clip that says what we’re saying (and demonstrating): For sure, “yosh” is spontaneous and energetic—a verbal burst of enthusiasm or resolve. We believe if you embrace the DragonBustR Way and it becomes a Way of Life (interwoven), you may find yourself bursting with enthusiasm and resolve.
Now on with the story!
Let’s begin at the beginning…
And so it was… That five weeks after we thought SUNSHINE SONGS would chase away the FOG… well, in playing with words from one famous movie: It’s B-A-C-K ! !
So is… our STORYTELLER with NO NAME who just so happened to bump into someone with… INSIGHT on how to deal with this UNWELCOMED VISITOR**. Let’s listen in… –the Gang
** Visitor vs. Guest – discuss. In our humble opinion a guest is someone you welcome with full out hospitality. “VISITOR” is like a catchall for… anyone or thing JUST. SHOWING. UP.
Got it? Good! Now let’s continue.
STORYTELLER
Hey, Guys! ‘Member me? Sure… That MIRACLE IN THE MTZ had folks singing and YES, it seemed to work as that particular pocket of the BAY AREA finally got its SUNSHINE.
Pauses for effect.
STORYTELLER
‘K-so… Life in the MTZ was great! People walking about … jogging about… NEW YEAR – Week 3 and some folks are still hanging with their resolutions, so that’s cool.
However… Last Saturday… an ALL HANDS ON DECK call went out to RUDOLPH and the many CLONES OF RUDOLPH as — this was NO longer just a MTZ problem… talkin’ F-O-G fog.
Another pause.
STORYTELLER
This time, it was like KARL THE FOG’s CUZ spent a few weeks gathering ALL his PALs to INVADE the ENTIRE BAY AREA along with areas EAST to SAC.
In the background, the sound of ANNIE singing can be heard.
ANNIE SING
The Sun will come out… Tomorrow… It’s only a day away.
The storyteller is shaking his head.
STORYTELLER
In the cartoon rolling through MY MIND’s eyes, I see shoes AND cans AND tomatoes being thrown at THE SINGER who WAS on the top of a fence performing, but had to make a hasty retreat.
Motioning away with his arms. Then he starts laughing.
STORYTELLER
The singer tried to make like the NINJA TURTLES going underground AND they… wanted nothing to do with SUNSHINE songs. Not their world apparently.
Pauses.
STORYTELLER
They weren’t mean… Rather they re-directed her. And the funny thing is… the redirect was ACTUALLY IN towards a strategy that was popular some years back — LEAN IN.
That was the recommendation… LEAN INTO the FOG thing!
…That was the recommendation… LEAN INTO the FOG thing!
He now takes a sip of a WARM BEVERAGE and smiles. Then he points to it.
STORYTELLER
The answer…? A cozy cafe would be the singer’s next stop… grabbing a [holds up cup] similar warm beverage, the singer happened to bump elbows with… a writer of some sort.
Pauses.
STORYTELLER
Not like a professional or one of those types that nurses a coffee while staring at their laptop… but a person fully absorbed in writing BY HAND with a nice FLO emerging from a thicker mechanical pencil — writer. Heck it could have been any of us taking a time out to — FLO OUT whatever’s shaking upstairs, ya know?
Points to his head.
STORYTELLER
I said bump elbows and it is truly what happened … NOT a figure of speech. To avoid colliding with a customer, the Singer stepped aside and incidentally nudged the TABLE and ELBOW of said writer — causing a graphite line to extend across the page.
Pauses.
STORYTELLER
In the words of Scooby Do, “Rut-Ro”! So here’s WHAT. HAPPENED. NEXT…
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. CAFE
SINGER
Oh… I’m SOOOOO Sorry…
She’s looking mortified. The WRITER is, to her anyway, surprisingly calm.
WRITER
No biggie. It’s like taking an aisle seat on an airplane. You’re gonna get bumped into sooner or later.
The writer looks down at her JOURNAL and smiles. With a creative flourish, the graphite streak is adapted into the FLO… looking like a PAPER AIRPLANE sailing through the sky.
WRITER
There ya go…
Looking up and smiling, the writer notes the singer has been observing with… let’s just say CURIOUS EYES.
SINGER
Wow… are you a…?
WRITER
Had something in my head I needed to get out… a vision so vivid…
SINGER
What kind of…
WRITER
A full on movie’s been … since I finished my run and … now I’m thinking I need to follow my own advice…
She points to the JOURNAL and flips back several pages where words and a sketch appear…
WRITER
Gotta get me to my NETFLIX … load ‘er up and …
The curious Singer smiles…
SINGER
I got NETFLIX! What is it…? Heck… Why is it…? I mean… Your energy. Your smile. Your eyes are like LIGHTING UP THE PLACE right now, so it has to be good…
WRITER
Called “THE SECRET OF ROAN INISH” from the mid-90s.
She types the title into the GOOGLE SEARCH on her phone and scrolls. Then a puzzled look comes on her face.
WRITER
Huh? At home… After my run… It said NETFLIX but…
No way!
SINGER
Oh well. Do you have some time to at least give me a… CLIFF NOTES overview? At least that’ll give me some context.
While asking, the Singer scribbles the title on a spare NAPKIN.
WRITER
Understand… it was long ago I watched it… experienced it… But let’s talk what I remember most and what ties to our current weather conditions… the opening, I believe… the sounds of the oars moving through the water and the fog horn and the bell on the buoy… as a young girl and an elderly man in a small row boat made their way to an island. That’s what popped into my head as I move through yet another day of… FOG!!
SINGER
Ah!
WRITER
The point being… my cinema experience of the film has resonated ALL these years later.
Counting fingers.
WRITER
Can it be… 30? 30 years ago??
SINGER
Gotcha!
WRITER
The other thing that sticks out in my mind was the emphasis on HANDS. The camera focused on what folks were doing… hands-on as this young girl was experiencing something entirely different from I guess you’d say, city life…
SINGER
Hands as in …
WRITER
I remember how for most of us, back then, hands on was pushing a mouse around the desktop and clicking. Today, could be thumb scrolling. But back then it struck me that for more balance in my life, I needed to engage my hands more…
The Singer looks at her hands and smiles.
WRITER
One more thing and THIS was super significant… The whole SELKIE thing… the story… the IRISH myth if you will, about a seal shedding its skin to take on a human existence — and then… the burning need to get back to the SEA… That one I researched… It’s beyond SHAPESHIFTing… It’s almost… losing yourself and then getting back to yourself. That ONE was transformational in my world.
The Singer’s eyes are like WIDE OPEN with WONDERMENT.
SINGER
Wow!
They are both silent (perhaps their brains are busy pondering it all). Then the Writer gets up.
WRITER
Gotta get a move on as I’m stiff-out!
The Singer gets up too.
SINGER
I hear ya. (pause) So… was ROAN INISH what you were writing about…
Points to the JOURNAL that now has a black scrunchie around it.
The Writer laughs.
WRITER
That? Ah… Went off about KARL THE FOG’s cousin returning because… well… all the reasons we HEART California…
It’s beautiful! You got those hills and water and lots of “natureful” things. You’ve got foodies and whatever you call those wine people… collectors… enthusiasts… I guess which are also… foodies. And the foodie culture hits like everywhere and every type of cuisine … and my personal favourite is the beer scene — Very creative brew options with fun cans too…
Finishing packing up, the writer slings the SATCHEL-PAK into position and motions towards the door. Bowing before exiting.
SINGER
It was a pleasure bumping into you.
WRITER
Likewise… And just talking to you gave me ideas, so… MUST AWAY!
FADE OUT.
