Being a post holiday “light news” day, the AP story about brewers finding ways to make cans cool was eye-catching.
There’s been a quest for quite some time to have craft beer (really good hoppy stuff) accessible for outdoor adventures. That pretty much eliminates bottles. Cans would be ideal.
Lyons, Colorado-based Oskar Blues had jumped on the “can-volution” early. Their beer is awesome and the can did not impact its flavor. Could be totally psychological, but Coors Light in cans tastes like bananas for some reason. In bottles, the taste is fine.
The AP story highlighted the Sly Fox Brewing Company of Pottstown, Pennsylvania. In April they launched Helles Golden Lager, its ninth canned beer, which was also the first where the entire lid of the can is removable so you are drinking out of a cup (visualize a soup can), eliminating the need for separate glassware.
The innovative 360 Lid beverage can technology used was developed by Crown Holdings, Inc.
In their announcement, Sly Fox Brewing Company head brewer Brian O’Reilly said, “This technology allows the full flavor and aroma of the beer to hit the drinker’s senses and makes the can an even more appealing package for outdoor activities and situations where you want to be able to move around and sip your beer easily.”

Definitely want to try it. Guess a trip to BevMo is in order this long weekend. And if that beer hasn’t come West, we’ll need to make other arrangements.

Peel-off cans — looking forward to see them make their entry in non-beer related drinks.
