While blasting through The Wall Street Journal I came upon a 2-page ad that made me stop — or rather do the equivalent of a double-take. Then it made me race to the Internet because I felt there was some ‘splainin’ to do.
So, why August 12? Also, what was up with all the “from day 1” items (there were 12 listed)?
Ah, but look at the last one, “50 years of passion from day 1.” So is this a birthday thing??

So August 12 was the first day of Monterey Motor Week. Events include:
- On Friday, Aug. 16, The Quail Motorsports Gathering will feature a Porsche exhibit highlighting 50 Years of the 911. One of the first 911s sold in the US will be displayed alongside the new 50th Anniversary 911 and the 2014 911 GT3.
- The Porsche Zentrum at Quail Lodge (8000 Valley Greens Drive, Carmel, Calif., 93923) will host the current lineup of Porsche models, including the 2014 911 GT3 and the upcoming plug-in electric Panamera S E-Hybrid, from Aug. 14 – 18.
- A special Porsche 911 class, the Weissach Cup will be featured at the 38th running of the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in honor of the 50th anniversary of the 911.

Since the 911 Carrera is out of my price range, I’ll just need to live vicariously through the photos posted on Instagram (with #50y911), and by reading more on the dedicated website.
