Swiped! Again! This time Peg writes about a discussion that took place on a Thursday towards the end of January as an early morning change-up (5:30am?) disrupted their usual routine. Read on! —the editor
Peg Here. I swiped Tom’s laptop again. This time to share an interesting exchange I had with him. I’m certain he would have written about this topic if he had the time — but he has been busy learning how to take calls for his new employer, Nordstrom. So without further ado, here are my recollections of a discussion that took place on a Thursday towards the end of January.
Peg
Hey TC, what gives? I was ready to watch Gayle, Tony, and Nate on the CBS Morning show, like we usually do, and instead changed the channel. What gives?
TC
It is a special day today, and Gayle, Tony, and Nate won’t be talking about it, or reporting it live.
Peg
Huh?
TC
Today so happens to be the day that the Oscar Nominations are announced. It happens way early for us… 5:30 am o’clock. And the only way for us to view it live is via Hulu.
Peg
That is awful early… Like a public company before the market opens. Don’t give me that look. Had to do something while you’re training and stocks are a nice diversion.
TC
We’ll talk about that another time. Circling back, the reason the announcement er… presentation happens THAT early is so it fits snuggly into the agenda of the New York City-based GMA … that is Good Morning America, which I do not regularly watch.
Peg
Ah… So that’s why I was seeing a new set of hosts. (pause) Not my favorite. So hang on… or rather educate me please… Why are you so hell bent on viewing it live?
TC
Great question… The Oscars are like my Super Bowl…
Peg
Oh THAT game? Is it in Las Vegas again?
TC
Nope, but that isn’t important. Super Bowl means big deal. And as an aside, you probably will find out in your time scrolling through business posts that advertisers covet time slots during the Awards show almost as much as the Super Bowl…
Peg
Okay, good to know. Now back to your desire or rather FOMO issues..
TC
Fear of… What? You’ve gotten cheeky my friend. (pause) Okay, so maybe I’m grasping at things that gave me comfort in the past.
Peg
Like?
TC
Like being a frequent flyer at the movies.
Peg
How frequent is frequent?
TC
Like … leveraging my days off and discount tickets to go … many times a month… which meant I pretty much got to see the same movies the Academy was voting on.
Peg
Wow… the full cinema effect too, not just this in home streaming thing we’re doing.
TC
Correcta-mundo, my friend. Now, not only am I barely getting out to the movies but, they’ve made it super hard with the expansion of the Best Picture category to ten films.
Peg
Traditionally five, right?
TC
And that change happened like years ago — for the 82nd awards. They are up to 97th now. I’ve had to change with the times too.
Peg
Gotcha. So how lucky were we this year with the movies you DID manage to see? For example, that Beetle Bug Movie we saw together was fun.
TC
You mean Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Got shut out.
Peg
What?! The Academy doesn’t like fun, eh? Okay, so how about that one you just took me to see? If was a movie right?
TC
Oh… I think you were referring to “The Last Showgirl“. I had high hopes for it … especially for my favorite Jamie Lee Curtis as a “bevertainer”. At age 65! Still working! But nada.
And I can see how you’d be a little confused as that movie was shot at the Rio down the street where our housemate James works.
Peg
Gotcha…
TC
Not sure I shared with you, but the lead in this and the one garnering the most publicity, was Pamela Anderson. I thought she was fantastic as a former lead dancer in a big show like Jubilee and Folles Bergere. Maybe the Academy couldn’t separate her Baywatch work from this one — and that was SOOOO long ago. If the actress category got expanded, both these women would have made it.
Peg
Gotcha! (pauses) There was another one… Yes… a really long singing movie you took me to… the one with that green chick. (pause) I snuck a quick peek at you and you had tears in your eyes.
TC
Guilty! That my friend, was Wicked!
Peg
Wicked like New Englanders say or wicked like evil out? Not that I’d use that word…
TC
Huh?
Peg
Just saying… the singing green chick movie WAS pretty good…
TC
Yes, and…. the name of the movie WAS “Wicked”… like the musical. With so much material, I guess they decided to make it have two parts… We saw Part One.
Peg
And that made you cry? ‘Cause you have to wait around for Part Two??
TC
I’m not thrilled they made that business decision — to release in two parts. It’ll probably work out in the long run. Anyway, I really liked this one. I AM a sucker for a movie musical, especially a good one like this.
Peg
Gotcha! So you cried because you have to wait? That’s it… right??
TC
Uh… Let’s go with that for now. Some other time I’ll tell you about my life long relationship with musicals.
Peg
Sounds like a plan, buddy.
TC
So circling back around, I would like to see Wicked win “Best Picture” but it is up against nine others. Not getting my hopes up. But good news for you, we MAY have a date to watch another nominated musical — if you dig subtitles — it is in Spanish. (Emilia Perez). Not big screen, but hey, if it does well in awards season, who knows?
Peg
TC, what I DO know is that we need to get out more. I get that you now have a new gig and all, but if I’m doing my math, those movie-going years of yours were when you were working at that very busy newsstand at the LAS airport, so — it’s doable my friend.
TC
With a village! You HAVE been reading my other posts, right?
Peg
I’m going to answer that with a yes, and…
TC
Okay. So, you got something cookin’ ?
Peg
Si! I will step away from stock watching –not exactly a big sacrifice since the tariff thingie has got everyone out of sync — and see if pals of mine so we can do group outings.
…see if pals of mine so we can do group outings.
TC
W-h-a—?
Peg
Watch me… Or not. Stick to that screen and your training. I’ll figure it out.
TC
Okay… What you said…
Peg
Stay tuned. Or as your editor often inserts:
To Be Continued…
That’s a Wrap…
TC and Peg plan on watching the presentation of the awards the next day as, sure enough, he’ll be up and running with his new day job on the very day of the event. He’s stoked for Hulu. And Peg is stoked to find pals to movie with. If you know of anyone, ping in the comments below and we’ll get something scheduled.–The editor
Thanks for reading. And check out this link if you want to get a jump on the nominees.
