Again? Who would have thought that being on the cover of EA’s Madden NFL 10 football video game would be such a risky proposition?
Last night, in the NFL season opener, Madden “cover player” Troy Polamalu of the Steelers, (who appears with Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals on cover of the Madden video game), left the game against the Titans with what Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin later termed an MCL (medial collateral ligament) sprain.
“Troy is their playmaker on the defensive side,” former Steelers defensive back Rod Woodson, a Hall of Famer, said on the NFLN after the game. “If they lose him, they lose an important part of that defense.”
USA Today had a story about the jinx which pointed out that the last four players to grace the cover of the Madden game — Donovan McNabb, Shaun Alexander, Vince Young and Brett Favre — have all had injuries and set backs during their cover year.
Seems to me that NFL teams should consider revisiting contracts to include a ban on doing Madden covers. And with John Madden now retired from broadcasting, perhaps he is the best choice for guy going forward.
