Notable Quotable on Hospitality…

The book that has bubbled up to the top of our reading pile is Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality by Danny Meyer (founder and co-owner of 11 of Manhattan’s most influential restaurants, including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, The Modern, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack).

This one is a keeper (and sharer), which means I’m writing and underlining a lot in my version AND I want to make sure others are aware of it — so share means share a link, not my treasured copy.

I had been poking around Amazon doing some research on another chef when this “karma find” happened. What caught my eye was the description which included the phrase “enlightened hospitality,” which was Mr. Meyer’s innovative philosophy.

The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors.

In an interview with Amazon, Mr. Meyer remarked, “Setting the Table can be enjoyed as a lively, personal memoir about a no-name guy who followed his passion, lived his dream, and made it to the top. It could also be a good read for someone who craves an ‘inside baseball’ look at the restaurant business in the big leagues of New York…pleasures, thrills, warts, and all. In the end, though, it’s the abundance of hard-won business lessons–applicable to any organization–that I think will make Setting the Table a lasting value in someone’s library.”

In what I’ve read so far, I concur!

That’s just one of the “Notable Quotables,” I found so far.

Here’s another one.

If you do give it a read, please let us know how you liked it.

Stay curious my friends!
