SOLVING’ FOR “THEN WHAT…”

EXT. WESTSIDE BREW PUB

The following week, RC THE STORYTELLER has arrived at the HUMBLESEA brew pub and is setting up in HIS preferred location not far from one glowing heater.
From the looks of things, the attendees from the previous session have returned along with newbies.

As folks are mingling, the OLD SCHOOL BOOMBOX with the volume very much under control plays RC’s opening theme song.

BOOMBOX SHANTY
There’s a party down on…

AUDIENCE IN UNISON
SWIFT STREET!

BOOMBOX SHANTY
Someone pour me up another glass of…

AUDIENCE IN UNISON
HUMBLESEA!!

Now RC chimes in.

RC THE STORYTELLER
Me and their stouts have a history…

AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Oh my, Good Lord!!

The music fades out and RC is smiling as he addresses the folks gathering around.

RC THE STORYTELLER
You ready for… SEA Stories…

AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Yeah!!!

RC THE STORYTELLER
Not just any SEA Stories, but a continuation of…
DUCKIN’ TALES…

He points to the RECAP NAP(kins).

RC THE STORYTELLER
Is our pal in the shadows with us yet?

It’s quiet with some light murmuring.

RC THE STORYTELLER
He’s not? Wow… Just when I was getting used to the
banter too. Maybe one of you wants to fill the void…

HAPPY LISTENER
Just FLO with it… We’re all ears here, right guys?

AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Yeah!

RC THE STORYTELLER
Fine then… here goes… Where we left off last
week was an excited young lady, named KATIE, was
developing a concept… for those of you in tech…
or not… but playing along…
Let’s call it DUCKIN’ 2.0.

Last week I mentioned how I had front row seats…
watching her as she INCUBATED and worked through her idea…
This week I want to drill down a little further so you
too can feel what I felt.

AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Yes! Please do!

RC THE STORYTELLER
This is the WHAT KATIE LEARNED episode which
starts at her Westside home.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. KATIE’S HOME OFFICE

RC describes the setting.

RC THE STORYTELLER
Katie is working at her computer… alternating sitting
and standing as that lady has a lot of energy. Anyway,
she’s got some Post-it notes with ideas attached to her screen.
She also is working two documents: One is just a text page where
she’s firing off thoughts and copy-pasting links. The other is…
Slide deck software … another go-to for her when she’s doing
mock-ups and eventually piecing together a story to tell…

It just so happens that as RC is describing the scene, projected on the make-shift screen
(sheet on a clothesline), is KATIE’S SCREEN with the words, @DuckDuckJeep highlighted.

Katie is looking at her screen and the various Web pages that are open, talking herself through the concept.

KATIE INTERNAL
Well… It’s definitely a step up from the Jeep wave
as you’ve got the element of surprise… and the Joy…
and the reminder to pay it forward… er… play it
forward. But then…

She stands to stretch and then continues.

KATIE INTERNAL
Duckin’ Etiquette? Rules??

Katie reads off the screen out loud.

KATIE
Per the person who started this DUCKIN’ thing…
Never place the rubber duck inside anyone’s Jeep…

I get that. Besides, it could trigger an alarm. My first
Jeep had a reach in alarm that was WAY obnoxious.

Anyway, it says here the Duckie should be placed
where it can be found straightaway.

Let’s see… Hood… yeah… An obvious for a “snap & save”
photo op. Same with fenders, front bumper or against
the windshield.

Katie reaches for her SLABBY THING and sketches a Duckie on each of these locations. Then she stands up and starts walking about.

KATIE INTERNAL
Let’s just say one of those locations has been gifted a
Duckie… Funny, I’m thinking of SESAME STREET and the
RUBBER DUCKY song.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. WESTSIDE BREW PUB

LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Noooooooooooo!!

AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Noooooooooooo!!!!

RC jumps in.

RC THE STORYTELLER
Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. And, Mr In the Shadows,
you ARE here!!
Nice!

Okay… he is… Well you ALL are right. Thus, another
compelling reason for this version of DUCKIN’ to be adopted…
to protect yourself from THAT VERY EAR-WORMY song.

Now let’s circle back to Lady Katie who has a particular
problem she can’t shake.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. KATIE’S HOME OFFICE

KATIE INTERNAL
Holy, moly! My brain won’t shut off… It’s a something
that’s plagued me throughout my career…

The “THEN WHAT?” problem.

She starts doodling on a scrap piece of paper as she talks herself through the concept.

KATIE’S INTERNAL
Where do the Duckies go after the pictures have
been taken… The center console? Kinda deep.
I’ve spent a lot of time rumaging around for
cassettes I’ve stored there…

Katie is moving around her office… pacing as she thinks through the concept.

KATIE’S INTERNAL
The glove box? Nah… way too cramped. Just manuals and
essential docs fit.

She heads downstairs towards the garage.

KATIE’S INTERNAL
Let’s do some eyeballing starting with… The trunk.

She opens up her trunk and smiles.

KATIE’S INTERNAL
I love the “add-a-trunk” feature. With my ’93 it was a
huge “win” as I was getting my head around Jeep ownership.
The cargo net is a plus… but not for Duckin. I’d feel bad
about pinning down my Duckies. And letting them just roll
around is not optimal– when you open the trunk, the
Duckies could roll on out into the street or parking lot.
Not cool!

She closes the trunk and then heads over towards the entryway where she did some quick sketches when she got in from her run. Scribbling some more, she
steps back and talks out loud.

KATIE
Okay… Love the concept. It’s the implementation that’s
a challenge… Like, how would I spread the JOY to fellow
Jeep owners? What’s do-able? And… Where would I keep my
stash of giftable duckies? Need to incubate a bit for sure.

RC THE STORYTELLER has paused to check on his audience

RC THE STORYTELLER
You following so far?

LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Yeah… What’s the deal with incubating?

RC THE STORYTELLER
It’s not unusual for Katie to take a break… step away…
switch gears and background task it…

I’ve witnessed her to burst back in the door after her workout
or a shift FULL of ideas.
And that’s exactly what happened.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. KATIE’S KITCHEN

Katie has returned from her run and is busy drawing out an idea on a piece of paper. A combination of scribbled writing and drawings fill the page.

KATIE
Cool beans! Dig it!!

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. KATIE’S GARAGE

A short while later, Katie is playing the garage. The door is open to help with visibility. Katie is walking around her Jeep, studying it closely.

KATIE
Ha! Might. Could. Work!

A picture of the JEEP with magnets strategically placed is projected on the sheet near RC while he continues his TALE.

RC THE STORYTELLER
So Ms Katie runs back inside to continue working on her idea.
Before long, she’s back in her garage. She’s visualizing a bit…
playing around with the positioning some magnetized 3x3s
on her Jeep.

LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Ah… The Trout Route magnets mentioned
last week…

RC THE STORYTELLER
Yup… let’s just say she re-appropriated a stack of
her husband’s “Trout Route” Sticker Mule magnets to visualize
placement and then… for mock-ups… remember the pictures?

LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Gotcha! Please continue.

RC THE STORYTELLER
Lady Katie is very visual, so she needed to “SEE” various
locations on the Jeep a magnet version could be placed.

She took a bunch of pictures and then, a short while later…
she returned to the garage. This time, the “Trout Route”
magnets have been altered as she adhered a color printout of
a DUCKIE she drew.

KATIE
Woo-hoo!

RC THE STORYTELLER
At this point she’s Snoopy dancing with joy. Super-stoked,
her mind can’t contain all the thoughts rolling through it.
She’s iterating now — taking pictures… doing sketches.
And then this FLO’d in…

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. KATIE’S GARAGE

KATIE
Nothing says Westside like… a PELI-DUCK in a hoodie!

Breaking the 4th wall…

RC THE STORYTELLER
Now we’re seeing variations of the concept… and while
the DUCK version is traditional, it’s the PELI-DUCK that
… might be the winner. See?

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. WESTSIDE BREW PUB
Now projected on the clothesline hung sheet are images.

RC THE STORYTELLER
These are some of the sketches she did …
on the SLABBY THING, and then uploaded to her computer
and used presentation software to play with background
colours.

Yellow is traditional, but her ALIEN GREEN version
definitely stands out. Tough decision.

So cute! Both are winners!

Oh yeah! Right on!

RC THE STORYTELLER
For sure, she’s onto something. And then, seeing me
observing her… she disclosed the next challenge.

RC points to a NAPKIN with words that say:

INT. KATIE’S GARAGE

Katie has pulled the various versions of her mock-ups off her Jeep and adheres them to the inside of her trunk –The Jeep’s metal door.

RC THE GREMLIN
Metal door… Brilliant! So what’s the plan?

KATIE
Plan?? Great question… I guess its proof-of-concept time.
Gotta road test it somehow. Must ponder.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. WESTSIDE BREW PUB

RC is checking a timer he’s set. The audience is in LEAN-IN, TELL ME MORE mode.

RC THE STORYTELLER
