EXT. WESTSIDE BREW PUB
It’s another @TheSEA session which opens with a surprise. The gatherers find themselves moving towards the screen in RC THE STORYTELLER’s normal spot.
On it, a cartoon is playing WITHOUT its soundtrack.
Instead, the BOOMBOX JUKEBOX is playing TLC’s hit “WHAT ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS?”

…Talk about your friends
Those ones who stand their ground
They won’t let you down…
The lyrics fade and the INSTRUMENTAL VERSION of the song continues while the cartoon also continues.
LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Our storyteller substituting cartoons this week? Nice!
Said with sarcasm, the others chime in.
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
Settle down, you!
AUDIENCE MEMBER 2
There’s probably a point…
AUDIENCE MEMBER 3
Relax now… Maybe we’ll get to view it again WITH SOUND…
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Yeah! Quiet, you!
So they follow along, as a different sort of tale is being presented.
Off to the side, and definitely out of sight, is RC along with KIMBA THE DRIVER.
KIMBA THE DRIVER
Are those really the words?
RC THE STORYTELLER
Huh? Was something WANDER KAT suggested… so I just rolled with it…
KIMBA THE DRIVER
Ah!
RC THE STORYTELLER
Notice I ramped up the INSTRUMENTAL.
KIMBA THE DRIVER
Of course. For sure, you got their attention.
RC THE STORYTELLER
Keepin’ em on their toes… Wondering… and if you think about it, this IS the tale of THE WONDER [slash] WANDER KAT… So why not?
KIMBA THE DRIVER
MR SQUEEK. (pause) Yes, and… I sense, there’s more, right?
She studies RC who has a huge grin on his face. He nudges her to watch the screen as the story of HENERY HAWK continues to play out.
Suddenly, the screen freezes as RC hits the PAUSE button on his REMOTE.
He takes his usual spot and addresses the gatherers.
RC THE STORYTELLER
Greetings, Folks! How’d ya like it so far?
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
Different…
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Yeah!
LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
What’s up with that? Are you substituting cartoons ’cause your storytelling well ran dry?
There’s a bunch of murmuring.
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
Settle down, you!
RC THE STORYTELLER
Yes, it’s different AND… NO, the well HASN’T run dry… It’s just…
He paces about.
RC THE STORYTELLER
As I was thinking about this story and where it is going… and going… and..
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Yes?
RC THE STORYTELLER
CLICHE, but Teamwork Makes The Dreamwork… and really, that’s the theme… ALLIES… the helping hands that … at the right place… at the right time.
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Ah!
RC THE STORYTELLER
So while thinking of where this Tale is going, I couldn’t shake the visual… of THIS particular CARTOON, that had embedded itself in my mind like forever ago.
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Really?
RC THE STORYTELLER
Yup! (pause) Now allow me to play it WITH SOUND. So you can have the full experience… Okay with that MR IN THE SHADOWS?
LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Yeah… Whatever… Roll ‘em!
And they all give the screen full attention for the 7-minute clip.
7-minute Cartoon…
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. BARNYARD
Little Henery the Chicken Hawk wants to trap Foghorn Leghorn for his dinner.
He sets his goal and then…
The barnyard dog says he can help if Henery finds him a bone. Gotcha! So wee Henery sets off and … rounds up help because to get to the bone, he enlists a mouse who wants some cheese and a cat who wants a fish. And strangely, Foghorn keeps showing up to help too.
With the cooperation of all these folks, objective achieved!
Barnyard dog uses the bone to knock out Foghorn cold, and wee Henery “choo-choos” him away. PENCILS DOWN.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. WESTSIDE BREW PUB
The cartoon has just wrapped with, again the “Bugs Bunny theme song”. The audience is laughing.
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
Good one!
AUDIENCE MEMBER 2
Vaguely remember it… Heart Henery though.
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
Determined. Focused…
AUDIENCE MEMBER 2
A Tale of ingenuity…
Of course, there’s grumbling from the SHADOWS GUY.
LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Looked pretty self serving to me… Transactional and…
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
Settle down, you! We want to hear RC’s take… and the connection to this tale.
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Yeah! Settle down!
Listener in the Shadows retreats and RC moves front and center.
RC THE STORYTELLER
Let me address something he raised as… it WAS something I wondered about while pondering this particular Tale. And then…
Pay attention…
RC projects on the SCREEN a SNAPSHOT from the cartoon.
RC THE STORYTELLER
The little guy is adding the bone to his wagon which also has… the CHEESE and the FISH. We get to see him THANK his helpers by delivering what he promised… sort of a reverse loop ending up with DOG getting his bone.
LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Yeah, so?
RC THE STORYTELLER
So… The little guy got the information he needed BEFORE delivering the goods… there was a leap of faith … a sort of sure I’ll help ya … NOT a give it to me and THEN I’ll help.
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
Good faith?
RC THE STORYTELLER
Yeah… He was helped and he kept his promises. That’s pretty cool, eh?
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Yeah!
LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Ohhh-kay… But… what’s the connection?
RC THE STORYTELLER
Glad you asked… Seriously Shadow Guy…
There’s some chuckling. RC projects another image on the screen.
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Shhhh!
RC THE STORYTELLER
Yup as this story is shifting to the rounding up of ALLIES.
Talkin’ bout your friends…
He point to the screen – giving the audience time to let it sink in.
RC THE STORYTELLER
Now in context of… THE JOURNEY.
The Journey…
A new SLIDE shows the ALLIES from the cartoon in the context of THE HERO’S JOURNEY.
RC THE STORYTELLER
The Tale I’m Tellin’… Story I’m Weavin’ follows the path of the Hero’s Journey… And if you aren’t familiar… you will be soon enough.
There’s some murmuring. RC continues.
RC THE STORYTELLER
Circling back to the story so far, it’s like… perhaps our WONDER KAT, MR SQUEEK knew… or sensed… that to get to his goal — to tell the story of…
RC pauses and looks at the audience.
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
JOY!
AUDIENCE MEMBER 2
From the WORLD OF JOY…
RC nods and smiles.
RC THE STORYTELLER
AND… The story within the story… One taking place WITHIN the WORLD OF JOY…
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Ahhh!!
RC THE STORYTELLER
He KNEW he needed ALLIES. AND… He sensed, the former Suit Ms KATIE was someone he could count on to help.
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Ahhh!!!
RC THE STORYTELLER
And there’s MORE! FOLKS from JEDEMI. FOLKS from THE WORLD OF JOY… and MORE!
EYES on ALLIES, then?
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
EYES on ALLIES, then?
RC THE STORYTELLER
And then some… as ALLIES POP UP… unexpectedly… like invisible hands helping… so THAT’S a LEAP… part of… accepting… Maybe Mr SQUEEK’s gut tells him — go ask… so and so. That,
my friends, is merely a start. You gotta be…
He scans the audience AND they truly are engaged, which makes him smile.
RC THE STORYTELLER
Open to… the adventure… Staying on your toes… embracing the challenge and enjoying interactions as… part of the prOcess… OKAY?
LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
What are you saying exactly?
RC THE STORYTELLER
FLEX MY FRIENDS… Be flexible. Be Open. You’ll hear as we go along that … pretty much everyone is WINGING it…
He catches the SHADOW GUY…
RC THE STORYTELLER
Don’t say it, Shadow Guy…
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Settle down, you!
LISTENER IN THE SHADOWS
Gesh! I’m in, ya’ll! I get it!
AUDIENCE MEMBER 1
Woo-hoo!
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Woo-hoo!
Just then, KIMBA whispers AND then motions from the side of where RC has been talking. She is holding up an invisible FOOD BOAT and making like she’s eating. Then she point to where the FOOD TRUCKS park with a THUMBS UP.
RC motions with his hands to lower the volume of the murmuring.
RC THE STORYTELLER
Ready to channel your inner HENERY HAWK?
They look up at him.
RC THE STORYTELLER
Ms Kimba, tell them what they won…
KIMBA
Hey, Guys! For your munching pleasure AND… for being such a wonderful audience for my buddy RC here —
She points towards the FOOD TRUCK area.
KIMBA
Meat on a STICK! Yummy Yakatori…
Meat on a stick!!
RC steps in…
RC THE STORYTELLER
MY TREAT! But remember… Sharing IS caring, so … let’s make sure there’s enough to go around okay?
AUDIENCE IN UNISON
Woo-hoo!
As they make their way towards the truck, a few hang back.
AUDIENCE MEMBER 3
ENCORE?
RC nods and presses PLAY.
RC THE STORYTELLER
ENJOY and then hurry over. Supplies MIGHT NOT last!
FADE OUT.
