The news recently broke that the National Pork Board is replacing “The Other White Meat” slogan with “Pork: Be Inspired.”
Yes, it is shocking and surprising. Surprising because it is hard to believe that classic slogan is nearly 25 years old (Here’s a link to a story about it from 1987).
Now for the shocking part. Okay, I get the rationale, but… inspired? By pork? I don’t get it. An AP story quoted Ceci Snyder, the Des Moines, Iowa-based board’s vice president of marketing:
“The overall goal is to move sales of our product. We want to increase pork sales by 10% by 2014. To do that, we needed to make a stronger connection, a more emotional connection to our product.”
Inspired?? Sure, the smell of bacon may make people smile. But..
You get my point. Then again, I’m not the target audience. I don’t get inspired by food.
Anytime I think of bacon, I’m reminded of the “filthy animal” scene from Pulp Fiction.
