Mad Men Barbie Dolls?

According to a story by Stuart Elliott of The New York Times, Mattel has plans to add “Mad Men” inspired Barbie and Ken dolls to their line.  He said it was “a promotion for the television series as well as for Barbie.”

Now before you go off wondering if little girls will be replacing tea parties with the type of in office drinking that’s prevalent in the AMC series, cool your jets. Mattel has set the suggested retail price at $74.95 each. Clearly, they are targeting collectors. The Don Draper, Betty Draper, Joan Holloway, and Roger Sterling dolls will most likely never leave their package.

Mattel is licensing rights to the characters from Lionsgate, the studio that produces “Mad Men” for the AMC cable channel. There will be 7,000 to 10,000 copies of each doll, to be sold in specialty stores and on two Web sites, and

Elliott’s story included an interesting quote from the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner.

The dolls are “a realization of a fantasy, in a weird way,” he said, because “on some level it’s such a measure of success to see your characters embodied by Barbie.”

According to the Mad Men blog on AMC’s website, these dolls will be made of “gracefully molded of Silkstone, a material that resembles the look and weight of porcelain.” As for costumes, the blog states:

  • Don Draper wears his classic, polished red-lined suit and comes accessorized with a hat, overcoat and brief case;
  • Betty Draper’s classic look is captured with unparalleled detail, from her faux pearl necklace to her pumps;
  • Joan Holloway looks chic in a purple skirt suit and perfectly styled coif with her staple accessory – a pen necklace;
  • Roger Sterling is looking dapper in his monogrammed shirt.

The Season Three DVD hits stores on Tue., Mar. 23. Each set includes one of four
exclusive collectible sketch drawings of the Mad Men Barbie Collector dolls.

Wonder how quickly the dolls will sell out?  Furthermore, what price they’ll fetch on eBay?
