In this week’s edition of “Things I Finished,” Sarai Hoffman talks about re-purposing a cardboard box to create something truly functional.

Let’s be clear about this everything happened because I get distracted very easily and I have several empty cardboard boxes. My intent was to re-purpose these for my kitty to use as a scratch post.
Then one day, I was in my little room searching and fixing things when I saw my nail polish all in a mesh bin. Organized of course, but not exactly functional. Every time I searched for a particular color, I’d have to lift or remove all of the bottles from the bin.
So It hit me…
I had seen the little shelved people use for their collectibles (The Container Store calls them tchotchke shelves).
WHY NOT TO MAKE A SHELVING SOLUTION FOR MY LITTLE AND FAT NAIL POLISH BOTTLES?
So I ran with the idea.
I cut some pieces from the box (trust me it wasn’t easy). My initial intention was to make it be like a little beehive. However, after so many failures, I realized that it even though it was a really cool look, it would be very difficult to actually remove the nail polish bottles.
Shifting my thinking, I opted to create straight shelves. To add some nice finishing touches, I painted outside, put paper in the back and added foil tape on the shelves.
VOILA!
I finished a fun looking, fully functional way to store my nail polish.
Pretty cool, huh?
