A member of the Jedemi LP Gang stirs up controversy (#Seen’em) during Enchanted Hill check-in… —the editor
WHERE ARE YOU NOW? NOT READY FOR YOUR CLOSE-UP…
INT. JEDEMI CAFE
It’s a typical day at Jedemi Cafe with a steady stream of customers filing through. Some are hanging out — enjoying the warmth of seats close to the windows. Many are gazing at their phones or tablet devices — watching clips and catching up on their social feeds. And in one corner, an iPad is propped up at an angle being viewed by two of the cafe’s regulars — and these aren’t just regular “filing through” regulars. These are two of the OG spirits who took up residency long ago.
They, FRANNIE and DOSSIE, are viewing the iPad with interest.
DOSSIE
Would you look at that? Could that be…?
It gets silent as Frannie finally sees what Dossie pointed out.
FRANNIE
No way…
DOSSIE
Just a theory, of course. But sort of fits. And it is kinda funny how the story that’s being spun here…
FRANNIE
Interesting… a fitted jacket for on camera appearance?
DOSSIE
Most likely not… as I think it could be our pal… Fits his profile… you know… getting a little too close to the action.
FRANNIE
So much for our “lie low, be heard but not seen” approach, huh… ?
Just then, two more of the OG gang show up, the duo of JOEY and DOC.
DOC
Hey ladies! Whatcha “huhing” about?
JOEY
Look at you!! Is that one of those… How do you call it? Slabby things? (pause) Is that the source of your “huh” Frannie?
Before Frannie can answer, Dossie jumps in and directs their attention to what’s showing on the tablet.
DOSSIE
Take a look fellas. What do you see?
There’s a pause and then Doc starts laughing.
DOC
He really did it! (pause) Joey, I told you.
DOSSIE
Told you? What did… ?
JOEY
Doc got wind of Frankie’s plan to head down to LA to help with the fires.
DOSSIE
Help? How does that work?
DOC
Not by himself, of course. He roped in X for the adventure. Figured with the winds whipping up into such a frenzy that planes can’t take off to drop water… that also means limited visibility for news teams to provide information and updates to folks in the critical path.
JOEY
We heard the situation is bad. Reports state many of the people evacuating ended up abandoning their cars …leaving on foot — which, of course, causes problems for the emergency vehicles trying to get around…
FRANNIE
So our Frankie plops himself in the middle of it?
DOC
With X… an experienced recon pilot. They are teaming up with X feeding information to Frankie and then…
DOSSIE
Ah…Frankie providing tips to the news fellow.
JOEY
So the intentions were right…
FRANNIE
But… huh…
DOC
Yup… Huh. Making headlines in the Post isn’t ideal.
JOEY
Hopefully, the guys will get the message and extract themselves.
There is another pause to mull over the situation. Then Doc proceeds to offer more context.
DOC
For what its worth, he had good intentions… and was actually on a mission to check out your old place.
FRANNIE
What?
DOC
He knew your Enchanted Hill was close to the action… and that many of the fire zones –Will Rogers State Park, for example–were your old riding er stomping grounds.
JOEY
Hey, Doc… Got an idea. You mentioned a map that’s kicking around here…
DOC
Hang on. Let me grab it.
In a flash, he’s back and all is silent while they study it.
DOSSIE
The red pin is… Your place Frannie?
FRANNIE
Looks like the location alright.
DOC
Was told … 1441 Angelo Drive just above Benedict Canyon.
JOEY
Incredible views, right?
FRANNIE
Yes and lots of room to ride our horses.
Doc lays out another overview. This one showing terrain.
JOEY
Wow! Very hilly…
FRANNIE
And “canyon-y”.
DOC
That’s what make those winds so fierce. (pause) Mind if I?
Doc takes over the iPad and brings up a story. Then he clicks on a picture.
DOC
Not to get all science-y on you, but this actually is a great visual.
JOEY
Explains the situation well and it makes sense why we don’t have it as bad up here…
DOSSIE
Presently…
They study the iPad and then Doc pipes up…
DOC
Ready to switch gears? Joey, I’m going to bring up your discovery…
Before Joey can answer, the page loads.
DOSSIE
Aha! (pause) One day you should tell us all about your Enchanted Hill.
JOEY
That would be a treat for sure. First hand perspective.
DOC

Frannie nods.
DOC

JOEY
We promise to keep a better eye on him. As for X…
DOSSIE
He’s a free spirit and all, so just let him be. Agreed?
