Jedemi Chronicles SE – The Taming of Viv – 008

The story continues…
Viv takes the night off and heads to the cinema to view a classic. Impactful, the film not only energizes her, but she finds herself revisiting scenes throughout the day. Did her movie companion experience the same feeling?

Scene 16 – “Thursday: The Movie Buddy”

FADE IN:

INT. JEDEMI CAFE

It’s early evening and Nicole is doing her best to relieve Viv of her duties so she can relax and get to the movies. She can be seen following Viv around saying “Got it” to everything Viv points out. You can tell Nicole just wants Viv to get going as she keeps checking her watch and looking at the front door. Finally she sees Sam and waves him in.

NICOLE
Alas, Viv! Your chariot has arrived!

VIV
Yes. Of course. Just let me grab my sweater.

NICOLE
Oh no you don’t. If I let you back into the office, you’ll probably get distracted and we’ll never see you again.

Viv rolls her eyes.

VIV
You know I hate the office.

NICOLE
Yeah… but I also know that you’ll invent work to stay here rather than take a break.

Sam hears the last part.

SAM
Evening ladies. You ready, Viv? I apologize for the delay. Ran into a bit of traffic on the way back from the job site.

NICOLE
Viv, I’ll grab your sweater. Sam, please move her in the direction of your truck.

SAM
Of course. Right this way Viv.

Sam guides her out the door.

CUT TO:

INT. SAM’S TRUCK

Sam has helped Viv get belted in and then walks around and let’s himself in. Nicole jogs up with the sweater and hands it to Viv through the passenger window.

NICOLE
Good night, kids! Enjoy your evening!

SAM
You bet we will.

Viv smiles and waves.

FADE OUT.

Scene 17 – “Friday: Sunrise Special”

FADE IN:

INT. JEDEMI CAFE

The sun is just starting to rise and begins to naturally lighten up the cafe. The reflection of the morning light in the mirrors. It’s relatively quiet with just the stirring of the opening staff getting things lined up for the day.
The sound of an airplane buzzing grows louder and then stops.
The view is from above as the cafe “wakes up.”

FRANNIE
Hey, X! You just getting in? (pause) Ah! What’s this? Special delivery?

The sound of an airplane is heard and then fades out just as Doc arrives.

DOC
Mornin’ Frannie. Beautiful sunrise, eh?

FRANNIE
No doubt the best time of day.

DOC
X sure was up early, huh?

FRANNIE
Actually, I think he’s still going from last night. Can’t figure out when he rests. He kindly swung by and dropped this off.

DOC
Let me look… it appears to be (pause)… yes… it’s a report.

FRANNIE
Oh?

DOC
Or a movie review. Are you familiar with “You Can’t Take it with You”?

FRANNIE
A George Kaufman play that our buddy Frankie turned into a wonderful movie. I believe that’s what Viv was seeing last night.

DOC
Ah! Excellent. We should get it for our movie night. Based on some of the things written here, it looks delightful.

FRANNIE
Let me read. (pause) Oh interesting… Looks like Viv’s prince had a good time.

DOC
Where do you see that?

FRANNIE
Right here.

DOC
Oh. I must have zipped right by it when I was scanning it. That’s good, right?

FRANNIE
Definitely. I think it’s great for her to have a movie buddy — someone to go with and talk to. Gets her out of thinking about this cafe 24/7, ya know.

DOC
Yeah. The buddy thing is good —

FRANNIE
I’m just wondering if he’ll be able to hang with a movie that’s not an action adventure?

DOC
That’s so cliche… like you’re saying all guys are just into action adventure movies? (he pauses) Oh wait… I get it. Are you saying Frankie makes chick flicks, huh?

FRANNIE
Not at all. The pacing is good. And in that film, there was some pyrotechnics. But definitely no car crashes. Or horses with riding and roping and shooting. Kind of a different type of film with a great message.

DOC
I’ll bet he was just glad to be able to spend time with her. He’s been coming around here a lot.

Frannie is concerned and Doc picks up on it.

DOC
I sense something’s bugging you. What is it?

FRANNIE
I guess it’s my turn now to be a little protective of Viv.

DOC
Oh?

FRANNIE
Well… it’s just… I feel like this movie night is a great thing… and seeing the classics sort of helps set up what Frankie’s got going…

DOC
And the problem is…

FRANNIE
Choices… I mean, like what if she decides to placate him and see some kind of action adventure instead of the classics at the Stanford?

DOC
Seriously? This is your worry?

FRANNIE
Yeah.

DOC
Let it go, sister. We’ve got enough pull around here to make sure Viv sees what she needs to see.

It gets quiet.

FRANNIE
Good point.

DOC
And Sam just wants her to be happy…

FRANNIE
…and maybe have a companion for dinner every now and then.

DOC
He’s a good guy and I’m sure he can help us in the bigger scheme of things.

There’s a pause as the scan of the cafe reveals that the sunrise has completed it’s show of brilliant colors.

DOC
Look at that! The color show is going away.

FRANNIE
Yeah… Just Nature’s way of saying “get to work!”

DOC
You’re right. I’ll go wake the gang.

FADE OUT.

Scene 17B – “Friday: The Spirit of Grandpa’s House”

FADE IN:

INT. JEDEMI CAFE

Viv strolls in with a smile on her face as Jimmy and his gang are heading out. She’s actually walking with a lot spring. And as she enters, the line of folks part to give her access to the front counter. Danny steps away from what he was doing, and moves in Viv’s direction. He takes her things as she continues behind the counter.

VIV
Top of the morning all! (to Tim) So how far down the line are you?

TIM
Haven’t started the tall mocha for James.

VIV
Great. I got it.

And again we see the drink making team of Tim and Viv click into gear — producing drinks at a record pace. When the line is whittled down to nothing, Tim turns to Viv to make some small talk.

TIM
Did I hear that right… that you were at the movies last night?

VIV
Indeed I was.

TIM
What did you see? It must have been good because once again, you’re “on” again today. Not that I’m complaining — I just need to plug into whatever you’re doing…

Viv has a huge smile.

VIV
Another Capra film — “You Can’t Take It With You.” It was amazingly well done and the theme was so relevant to today’s times that I could hardly believe it was made in the 30s.

Capra's "You Can't Take It With You"

Capra’s “You Can’t Take It With You”

TIM
Oh?

VIV
Yeah. You and Nicole should go see it. If you can’t make it to the Stanford… I know you both have crazy schedules… then definitely rent it.

Tim and Viv have been wiping down the counters, replenishing supplies and making drinks while this conversation is going on. Tim smiles and nods

TIM
We’ll look into it.

VIV
Speaking of looking into it, could you check to make sure Danny got this morning’s deliveries squared away in the walk-in?

TIM
Will do!

Tim moves from behind the counter and Viv take a moment to clean the nozzle on the espresso machine. While doing that, she momentarily flashed back to a scene from the movie.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. BANK — YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU

Shift to black/white: It is the scene where Poppins pulls his invention from underneath his stand at the bank and shows Grandpa — it looks like a bunny rabbit popping out of a hat (or hole) twirling around and then going back into its hole (scroll down for full clip).

I make things...

I make things…

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. JEDEMI CAFE

Shot from customer view of Viv laughing at the espresso machine. It is the POV of Sam who has just approached the counter.

SAM
Howdy, Lady! What’s so funny?

The sound of Sam’s voice brings Viv back to the present and she looks over to see him holding a gift basket (which looks suspiciously like the Poppins invention).

VIV
And Howdy to you. I see you found last night’s movie inspiring… is that an invention you’d like to share?

Sam is smiling.

SAM
Not exactly. Just something I’ve been wanting to give you — I almost walked out the door AGAIN without it.

Viv looks and it is a gift basket with soaps, lotions and bath beads.

VIV
Wow, Sam! How thoughtful of you.

Viv looks up and sees more customers arriving, so she sets it aside.

VIV
The usual?

Sam nods. Viv looks beyond Sam to the others in line.

VIV
The usual for you? Joe?

She zips into gear and Sam moves to the side to admire her work. Once the line has disappeared, he steps back up and is looking at Viv smiling.

VIV
What?

SAM
Oh nothing… (pause) Well, actually I just wanted to thank you for inviting me along last night.

VIV
Uh… Sam… Remember. You invited yourself.

SAM
Oh yeah. That I did.

VIV
So you’re saying, you’re glad you did? And had a good time?

SAM
Yes on both counts.

Viv has now moved from behind the counter and is fixing things in the cafe (pushing in chairs, picking up newspapers).

VIV
I was afraid you were bored to tears and that I’d probably never see you again.

SAM
That was an interesting movie. In fact the more I think about it, the more I liked it.

Viv smiles (especially since she just had that experience herself).

VIV
Indeed. I know the feeling.

SAM
Well, I’m going to let you get back to work.

VIV
Thanks for dropping by. Have a great day!

SAM
You too darlin’

Sam smiles and waves as he leaves. Viv retrieves the gift basket from behind the counter. Tim watches and smiles.

TIM
The walk-in looks spectacular. Danny did a great job.

VIVCool. I’ll be in the back if you need me.

Tim waves as Viv heads back towards the office.

FADE OUT.
