Agony of Da Feets: Peg Meets Babs…

In this post, TC comes to grips with yet another challenge as his other foot screams for attention. Read on! —the editor

Peg
Hey TC, I enjoyed the outing today, but I notice you’ve got a frowny face. What gives?

TC
I cannot hide anything from you.

Peg
Well, Duh…

TC
Well, we discussed my support system here, which you are a part of.

Peg
Yes, and…

TC
And it’s time to discuss the another member of the support system: That would be Babs!

Peg
Babs? Are you cheating on me?

TC
Hardly! Babs has been around for a very long time. Long before you.

Peg
I see. Is she a singer? I’m pretty sure I saw that Babs on the TV. She kept singing about Raining on her Parade. Doesn’t figure in this context though.

TC
THIS Babs is not that Babs. We can talk about that one another time as I like that subject a lot. This Babs is… Do you remember me talking about Agnes?

Peg
Isn’t that the code word of you Mom?

TC
LOL, in a way, it was a code word my siblings and I had for my Mom when she had a mood swing, otherwise known as her evil twin.

Peg
So you knew another Agnes?

TC
LOL, well Agnes could be a sibling to Babs, in a way. Agnes was my jacked up left foot that had to be removed to make way for you, Peg.

Peg
Ohhh! So the Babs we’re discussing is the name of your right foot?

TC
Bingo! Now life has tradeoffs and is about finding balance… literally. So Babs literally did the heavy lifting while you were learning the steps. And, not that she unioned up or anything, but she’s kinda going on strike.

Peg
So instead of a picket sign and marching about, she’s… What’s up with that white and tan coat?

TC
That is not a coat, it is a bandage. Her way of indicating she’s sitting this one out for a bit.

Peg
A bit?

TC
Let’s just say… Point made. She can’t be doing as much work as she was. So, we’re going to let her recoup her energy and fingers crossed, she’ll come back to work cheery and ready to go.

Peg
There’s a bigger lesson in all this, right TC?

TC
Yup. At the highest level… don’t take any part of your support team for granted — they could go on strike or just “at will” themselves and step away.

Peg
Yes, and…

TC
The biggest elephant in the room… A diabetic NEEDS to monitor feet. Got to! It isn’t an option. It isn’t like years ago, pre-diabetic. Feet and eyes… We’ll talk eyes another day.

Peg
Gotcha! So, got some handy tips for our readers?

TC
Well, I’m no expert though I could address what I’m doing now… with shoes.

Peg
Sure! Let’s provide some pointers that even you can circle back to as a reminder of how proactive you need to be with foot maintenance as a diabetic.

TC
Okay… Here goes!

Gotta Be Da Shoes…

Take care of your feet!

Best advice I received from my sister, get good shoes.

Being a diabetic makes me pre-dispositioned for foot sores. Thing is… Just one day without footwear can cause an open sore that will. not. heal. No bueno!

Thick supportive shoes are important. I went one step further with prescription shoes custom fit.

Where to Buy:

I got mine from my Prosthetic office using a prescription from the doctor.

Also, depending on the size of your foot, a decent slip-on slipper can be effective to protect from additional ulcers.

This too could be obtained with a doctor’s prescription. But you know, hitting Amazon is effective (and pretty darn immediate if you’ve got Prime). See above on why you should move with a sense of urgency.

That’s a Wrap!

Let’s close with this.

Puts a smile on your face, right? Let’s just say, the Gladue tradition of medical ducking has legs (feet perhaps?).

When Babs gets her treatments (told her she’s going to a spa) the team of Dr Xu, Gabby, Garrett, and Rob take care of her while I get to see “the pond”!

Apparently, the Gladue ducks got neighbors, from other patients in the office. The ducks, and their story , have been a topic of discussion. They ducks have been updated, some left and some came back, and added friends. A tradition that was started by the original Agnes, has manifested itself, and lives on, in many ways.

Peg
You’re smiling now!

TC
Yes I am.

Peg
Let’s do more of that!

TC
Copy that!

Thanks for reading! And seriously… AMA applies here except it is AUA (As Us Anything). We’d be happy to answer your shoe questions.
