And now the drill down…

First Up: One Life (2023) starring Anthony Hopkins

Based on the book If It’s Not Impossible

The film “One Life” tells the incredible, emotional true story of Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton (Flynn), a young London broker who visits Prague in December 1938. In a race against time, Winton convinces Trevor Chadwick (Sharp) and Doreen Warriner (Garai) of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia to rescue hundreds of predominantly Jewish children before Nazi occupation closes the borders.

Fast forward to fifty years later as we find that Mr Nicky (Anthony Hopkins) is haunted by the thoughts of all the children he wasn’t able to rescue.

In a powerful scene, the BBC show “That’s Life!” re-introduces him to some of those he helped rescue — the whole audience stands up.

Next Up: Fast Charlie…

This is a “‘lighter” viewing suggestion with Pierce Bronson in the lead role of Charlie Swift —a fixer for a mob boss named Stan (James Cann) with a problem: the target that’s been whacked by an apprentice is missing his head — so there’s lack of Enter Marcie Kramer (Morena Baccarin) the victim’s ex-wife and a woman with all the skills Charlie needs to overcome this challenge.

Fast Charlie (2023)

While researching a Pierce Bronson film where he played a WWII vet who escapes his nursing home to participate a D-Day Landing event, I noticed this hidden gem. —Mr Pete

Note: The movie referenced above is called “The Last Rifleman.” It centers on Brosnan’s Artie Crawford, a World War II veteran living in a care home in Northern Ireland who has just lost his wife. On the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, he decides to escape his care home and embarks on a journey to France to pay his final respects.

Next Up: Thelma (2024)…

Thelma is an action-comedy about a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who gets conned by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson. She fights back making a treacherous quest across Los Angeles, accompanied by an aging friend and his motorized scooter, to reclaim what was taken from her.

The people in our community can relate to Thelma on a personal level. And with scammers at an all time high, this scenario is not far fetched. —Mr Pete

The lead is played by veteran June Squib (NEBRASKA) who did many of her own stunts (?!). Her sidekick is trailblazing actor Richard Roundtree (SHAFT) in his final performance of trailblazing actor Richard Roundtree (SHAFT).

Last Up: The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

This one is an action-comedy that tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming.

The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern Black Ops warfare.

A Guy Ritchie film, I was intrigued. The plot? Felt a lot like “Dirty Dozen” and “Great Escape.” —Mr Pete

That’s a Wrap!
